Why ZIP code is not enough
A ZIP code is a mail-delivery area, not OPM’s locality boundary. It can cross counties, and a remote employee’s home address may not be the official worksite recorded by the agency. Start with the official worksite and verify the county or county-equivalent FIPS code.
Step 1
Read the record
Identify the official worksite or duty station.
Step 2
Confirm the county
Use a county or county-equivalent FIPS code—not ZIP alone.
Step 3
Use the table
Take the returned table code to the exact GS pay lookup.

Locality pay FAQ
How do I find my federal locality pay area?
Use the official worksite on the personnel record, identify its county or county equivalent, and match that county’s FIPS code to OPM’s published locality-area definition.
Can I find locality pay by ZIP code?
ZIP code alone is not authoritative. ZIP areas can cross county and locality boundaries, and locality pay generally follows the official worksite rather than a residence.
What happens when OPM does not list a county?
For the 50 states and District of Columbia, a county not assigned to another published locality table maps to Rest of U.S. Alaska and Hawaii are statewide locality areas.
Why does New Jersey have an extra worksite question?
OPM separately lists Fort Dix, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, and McGuire Air Force Base under the New York-Newark locality area. Their surrounding county alone can produce a different result.
Does this finder calculate my exact salary?
No. It identifies the 2026 OPM table. Use the separate GS Pay Calculator with your grade and step for the exact published cell.
