Boundaries before you claim
- Agency authorization, constructive-cost limits, claimed distance, and final voucher approval are not determined
- Local commuting, tax deductions, rental cars, airfare, per diem, and GSA Fleet lease charges are excluded
- Fuel, repairs, depreciation, insurance, taxes, towage, oil, and similar vehicle costs are included in the mileage allowance and cannot be added
- Only one traveler may claim mileage when multiple employees share the same privately owned vehicle
- Airplane distance must be entered in statute miles; convert nautical miles before calculating
Federal mileage questions
What is the federal mileage rate in 2026?
GSA's authorized privately owned automobile rate is 72.5 cents per mile for travel from January 1 through June 30, 2026 and 76 cents per mile for travel from July 1 through December 31, 2026. Different rates apply to motorcycles, airplanes, moving, and a personal automobile used when a government automobile was available.
Why did the federal mileage rate change on July 1, 2026?
GSA Bulletin FTR 26-03 made a midyear adjustment after the IRS increased its optional standard mileage rate for the final six months of 2026. The bulletin canceled FTR 26-02 for travel beginning July 1, 2026.
What if a government automobile was available?
If a government-furnished automobile was authorized and available but you chose your own automobile, GSA's lower constructive rate is 20.5 cents per mile before July 1 and 23.5 cents per mile beginning July 1. Your agency determines whether that situation applies.
Can parking and tolls be added to mileage reimbursement?
The FTR lists parking, ferry, bridge, road, and tunnel fees as potentially reimbursable beyond the mileage allowance. Aircraft parking, landing, and tie-down fees are also listed. Your agency must determine that the entered expense is allowable.
Does the mileage rate include fuel and vehicle costs?
Yes. The FTR treats fuel, repairs, depreciation, replacements, grease, oil, antifreeze, towage, insurance, and state and federal taxes as included in the mileage allowance rather than separately reimbursable additions.
How should airplane mileage be entered?
Enter statute miles. The FTR requires nautical miles to be converted before a voucher is submitted using 1 nautical mile equals 1.15077945 statute miles. FAA charts generally determine the claimed distance.
